Canoe and Kayak Program

Canoeing and Kayaking

All ages participate in the Canoeing and Kayaking Program on our two acre lake.  Beginners start in open canoes or in kayaks gaining confidence in boats and learning control under careful supervision by our experienced and certified instructors.
Every group ventures off site for a canoe trip on nearby Seneca Creek, the C&O Canal or a flat water section of the Potomac River.  As campers earn their achievement cards at the lake they can then qualify to participate in beginner, intermediate and advanced kayak trips.

Rock Climbing

Safety measures are of utmost importance when campers are climbing our 25’ training wall. Instruction in the use and care of all rock climbing equipment is received by each camper before he gets off the ground. Occasional trips to Carderock will be available to the more advanced climbers who qualify.

Water Show

The annual  Water Show is an exciting event held the sixth week of camp.  All campers will learn the synchronized swimming skills during their regular classes.  Music is chosen, routines are choreographed, costumes designed and with a spirit of teamwork and much practice the water show is then presented to parents, grandparents and friends.  This wonderful tradition has been ongoing since the beginning of Valley Mill Camp in 1956.

Advanced Trips

The Trip Program

Valley Mill Camp is located so close to some of the area’s great natural outdoor resources: Seneca Creek, The Potomac River, The C&O Canal, Great Falls National Park, Carderock, Sugarloaf Mountain and more. As Valley Mill Campers achieve specific technical skill and master safety training, they are rewarded with off site qualifying trips in the areas of canoeing, kayaking, rock climbing and hiking.  We take advantage of all that nature offers us and trips go out on a daily basis.
