Inclement Weather Policy
Valley Mill Kayak School events happen rain or shine so you should plan to attend regardless of the weather report.  In the case of thunderstorms or lightning we wait for 20 minutes after the last thunder is heard to make sure all the lightning has passed before putting on the water. If the delay is longer than 1 hour, then the event will be postponed.  In cases when severe weather can reliably be anticipated for an extended period of time, VMKS will contact participants to advise them of any change in plans.

A brief explanation of the VMKS Inclement weather policy to clarify things:

Generally during the summer in the D.C. area, afternoon and evening thunderstorms are the major weather-related concern we face.  Usually these storms are very localized and do not last longer than 30 minutes.  Therefore, it is likely that even if there is a storm elsewhere near the city, around the river the weather is clear.  Or, if it is storming along the river, it will probably pass quickly.
Given these considerations, VMKS will always plan on holding the planned event.  A decision to postpone the event will be made at the location where and time when an accurate evaluation of the weather conditions can be made.  It is therefore advisable that if you are registered to take part in the event, arrive on time and prepared to participate.
