All Valley Mill Kayak School classes are taught outdoors (except for indoor pool
rolling during the winter). Therefore,
students may encounter a variety of water and air temperatures, sun exposure,
and changing weather conditions. Listed
below are clothing and other items that you should bring to your class and an
explanation as to why they are useful.
| Nylon Shorts/Bathing Suit: | Quick-drying, rugged nylon clothing is ideal for kayaking. (Note: women may want to wear a pair of nylon shorts in addition to a traditionally cut bathing suit for coverage while sitting in the kayaks) |
| Closed toed shoes: |
Neoprene
booties, aquasocks, or old sneakers are all great.
Tevas or similar sandals with a pair of socks are acceptable as
well. Protecting your feet
from rocks and other unknown hazards in and around the river is very
important. |
| Synthetic shirt: |
This
is for sun protection and warmth on cool days.
Polypro, capilene, or polyester are all good materials. Cotton is
not recommended because it dries slowly and does not insulate well when
wet. |
| Sunblock: | There is very little shade and plenty of sun on the river. Sunblock prevents sunburn and we highly recommend you lather up before class. |
| Sunglasses: | Although not as important as other things on this list, many people prefer to wear sunglasses on the river. Don’t forget straps so your glasses don’t fall off. |
| Water Bottle: |
It is important to drink plenty of liquids when exercising, especially in hot, sunny weather |
