Evelyn McEwan - President & Owner

Bio

Evelyn McEwan is the matriarch of the Valley Mill community. Her parents, the founders of Valley Mill, instilled in her a deep love of the outdoors. As the very first Valley Mill CIT, she began her lifelong commitment to helping children gain confidence and ability in the natural world. Evelyn’s long career in education has sharpened one of her most important gifts: her deep understanding of what makes children tick. She is fiercely protective of the state of childhood, and has created a safe, nurturing environment where children can play and find out how capable they really are.

Bruce Uthus - Vice President

Bio

Vice President of Valley Mill Camp, Boys Camp Director, Valley Mill Slalom Team Coach, grandson of the founders of Valley Mill Camp. Bruce was practically raised at Valley Mill, and embodies the very spirit of camp - the fun, wonder, and life-long experiences. Bruce was a camper throughout his childhood, and then started working as a young teenager. At camp, he worked his way up the ranks to Director, and has been leading the Boys Camp ever since. Away from camp, Bruce has been an EMT, an English teacher, a US National Athlete, and has traveled the world - exploring, teaching, paddling and overall adventuring. He is the father of Tyler Uthus, who also works at camp, and who is an accomplished slalom kayaker. Bruce is extremely passionate about children having the opportunity to explore and fall in love with nature and the outdoors, and has devoted his life to sharing this passion with our youth. On any given day, you're sure to find him on the river, out and about in the woods, or on some other adventure!

Vicki Mostrom, Girls Camp Director, is excited to return to camp to further promote the Girls Camp philosophy of kindness and safety while having fun. Vicki is a teacher for MCPS during the school year and considers VMC a giant outdoor classroom where kids can unplug, immerse themselves in nature, develop leadership skills, all while challenging themselves to take risks. What she loves most about Girls Camp is watching the girls develop their skills and finding their favorite activities. In the past Vicki has worked at a group counselor, lifeguard, CIT director, and Girls Camp Assistant Director.

Jim Buley- VMKS

Bio

Director of Valley Mill Kayak School and manager of Valley Mill Boats. Jim started paddling in June of 1992. He has been instructing since May of 1994. Jim’s favorite quote: “Kayaking is FUN!” Favorite River: The Potomac “The Potomac has everything a kayaker could ask for- from class 1 to class 5 rapids in a two mile section of river, from Great Falls to Anglers Inn. It is the best river to learn on because of it’s diversity, easy access, and year ’round paddling season.” Favorite River Experiences- I enjoy competing in freestyle, and squirtboating. I competed in the US National Freestyle Championships during the Teva Tour of 2001- that was an amazing experience ! I also love anytime I run Great Falls with my friends, or paddling the Gauley in the fall- good times! I think river running with your friends encompasses all the greatest aspects of kayaking.
